FEUERWACHE 1 SOUTH STUTTGART 2022 – A variety of issues involving different topics come together to make the new construction of the south fire station a complex planning task overall. The design aims to tie the complexity of the building together using feasible strategies and an architectural form that is as clear as possible. Towards this end, two simple buildings with a familiar shape are being erected that encompass a courtyard opening to the adjacent Jakobschule school. The two components have a different appearance despite being made of the same material: One is bold, red, stocky, and low-slung—the other is mineral, pale, slender, and erect.
The fire station takes up the entire plot: Along Heusteigstraße is a low, four-storey building with a roof-like closure, towards Katharinenstraße monolithic entranceways. In between is an enclosure that bring the courtyard and different building parts together to create a whole. The administration building rests on the Katharinenstraße entranceways as if set down from the top. Its cubature and roof shape draw from the neighbouring Marienheim building. To the north-east, it is closed off by a gable wall that recedes at right angles, opening up a view of the new station.
