SPITALERSTRASSE HAMBURG 2018 — Department stores and office buildings from the early 20th century characterise Spitalerstraße, a street steeped in tradition. The Mönckeberghaus, Seeburg, Barkhof buildings are joined by the former public reading hall to form an outstanding ensemble of late historicism. The filigree stone façade structure of the new building, a modern building block, fits comfortably into the environment.
The vertical and tectonic structuring of the façade design is inspired by the theme of “inversion”. This shows itself as a sculptural imprint that allows the expressive elements of the surrounding architecture to appear in reverse.
